Assembly tool cap nuts?

The clamping arms on my assembly tool came with cap nuts (closed at the top instead of open, as a nut would be).
Therefore, it can only go down the clamping arm until it runs into the cap of the nut. Did i throw away the open nuts accidentally? I can go buy the nuts easy enough at Ace but what are these for?

Think of these as panel knobs for industrial use, good ones with a brass thread seat in them and a complete closed roof.

I have the same issue, mine just arrived today and there were no “ nuts.”…
